LIST PICK

JULIA JACKLIN EASTWICK

Julia Jacklin is back on our new music radar following following the release of her celebrated debut album, Don't Let The Kids Win. The former social worker turned musician is currently working on new material in Barcelona, but before that she popped over to New Zealand from her Sydney home to record single in question 'Eastwick' with DLTKW producer Ben Edwards. As always, what stands out most is Jacklin's sage lyricism - "c'mon now, your roots are showing, unlike hands, your hair keeps growing." Her empathetic voice swoons in a comforting lullaby melody, punctuated by her signature pitch lifts and husky passiveness. While the instrumentation begins sparsely, almost like an intimate gig performance, it doesn't stay that way. The tempo kicks up around 1:40 with the guitar and drums progressing into fuzzy, heavy-handed, passionate motions. Not only has Jacklin treated us to the blissful listen that is 'Eastwick', but she's also announced a string of UK shows starting November this year. - HT
